Children who live in Busbee Community have for years been considered essentially 100% at risk. A survey in 1994 showed that no adults living in the development, an old low-income housing area, had ever earned a high school diploma or GED. Calvin Jones wanted to make a difference. Having grown up in an environment similar to Busbee, Calvin knew that breaking the chain of poverty was possible if the right experiences and guidance were offered. With this in mind, Calvin and his wife, Catherine, began an ambitious plan of opening a facility which would provide a safe and caring academic environment for the children. With a vacant house in the Busbee community, the Joneses began renovations with donated items and their own personal investments. In July 1995, the Skill Day Center officially opened. The Jones family volunteers its time every day to tutor the children with homework after school. Twice each week, they coordinate GED classes for area adults. The results have been tremendous. Teachers of the Busbee children now document higher grades and less absenteeism, as well as positive attitudes and new-found self confidence. As the services at the Center grow, so does the investment in the community. Skill Day Center at Busbee Community (352) 351-4052
